EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A car was found in the Providence River Thursday morning off of Bold Point Park.

East Providence Police told 12 News the call came in from a witness around 5:30 a.m. who said they saw the car about 50 yards from shore.

Police said they spotted the roof of the vehicle before it fully submerged, and they believe the car went off a boat ramp.

The car has since been relocated around 8:45 a.m. thanks to search and recuse boat and diving efforts and they’re now working to get it to shore.

It’s still unclear if anyone is trapped inside the car.

The car wasn’t relocated for more than two hours due to the rising tide, police said.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been activated, and crews from several surrounding communities are on the scene.
