PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — After nearly two decades leading the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, Pope Francis has accepted the retirement of Bishop Thomas Tobin.

The Diocese of Providence made the announcement early Monday morning.

Tobin submitted a letter of resignation when he turned 75 on April 1.

Bishop Richard Henning was announced as Tobin’s replacement in November of 2022. He now automatically succeeds him as the 9th Bishop of Providence.
