A photo of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. accompanies an article reporting that the anti-vaccine activist and member of the famous political Kennedy family is running for president. He submitted a statement of candidacy to the Federal Election Commission, but his bid for the 2024 Democratic nomination against incumbent President Joe Biden is considered a long shot. Kennedy’s belief that vaccines are not safe has made him a leading voice in the anti-vaccine movement for over 15 years. He founded and leads the anti-vaccine charity Children’s Health Defense, which grew rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Public health experts have criticized Kennedy’s work as misleading and dangerous, specifically to groups like mothers and Black Americans. Kennedy’s anti-vaccine stance has led him to promote unproven COVID-19 treatments and associate with anti-democratic figures and groups, including those involved in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection. His sister Kerry Kennedy, who runs the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights group, opposes his views and warns that they are “very dangerous.”
