The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office has announced that former New Bedford Whaling Museum employee Robert Burchell is facing new charges for stealing pocket-sized artifacts. The Bristol County Grand Jury indicted him for 19 counts of larceny over $1,200. Burchell is accused of stealing artifacts from the museum while he was a facilities associate and covertly selling them to local pawn and antique shops. He was taken into custody in January after a West Bridgewater shop owner claimed to have purchased some of the stolen artifacts from him. The DA’s office estimates that Burchell stole over $150,000 worth of artifacts from the museum, most of which have since been returned. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the new charges next Friday.
