The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has plans to implement a new traffic pattern on the George Washington Highway (Route 116) Bridge in Smithfield, Rhode Island. According to RIDOT, one lane will be open for travel in each direction on the northern half of the bridge which carries thousands of vehicles over I-295 daily. This move allows crews to carry out repairs and renew the south side of the bridge as part of a $16.2 million rehabilitation operation that includes ten bridges in the vicinity. The construction will shift the traffic pattern twice more this year and conclude in the fall.
