Councilman John Goncalves, who teaches at the Wheeler School in Providence, has announced his candidacy for the Democratic primary in the 1st District race to replace David Cicilline in Congress. Goncalves emphasized his commitment to economic and social justice, climate justice, education, housing, and gun violence prevention. With two prominent Democrats, House Speaker Joe Shekarchi and former gubernatorial candidate Helena Foulkes, not running, the race has become more crowded. Goncalves, who represents Ward 1, joins six other Democrats in the race, with more expected to follow. The primary is expected to be held in August or September.
