The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is set to open a new intersection near the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge as part of an ongoing reconfiguration project, as reported by WPRI. The traffic pattern will reconnect J.T. Connell Highway on 1 April, providing straight access for northbound drivers through the intersection to the Middletown roundabout, while southbound drivers will have straight access toward downtown Newport. The next phase of the project, starting in mid-April, will see RIDOT open a new on-ramp to the bridge from J.T. Connell Highway that will eliminate the need for a traffic light.
