A Pawtucket woman, Dawn Abbenante, has been charged with animal cruelty by the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) after her neglect led to the death of her elderly terrier mix. Abbenante brought the dog to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists, where it was found to have significant hair loss, matting, and two large abdominal tumors. The RISPCA attempted to contact Abbenante but failed, resulting in a warrant being issued for her arrest. Abbenante was arraigned on Monday, facing a felony count of unnecessary cruelty and a misdemeanor count of care of dogs. She was released on $3,000 personal recognizance and is set to return to court on June 3. An image of Abbenante is included.
