Cape Cod’s seasonal residents have begun to arrive in the bay, and the Center for Coastal Studies’ Right Whale Ecology Program reports that 21-year-old North Atlantic Right whale Porcia and her new calf were spotted on Saturday. To protect the endangered species, vessel speeds are restricted between March 1 and April 30. Within Cape Cod Bay, vessels less than 65 feet in length must maintain speeds at 10 knots, while boats and aircraft are prohibited from approaching within 500 yards of the animals. The species, which has fewer than 350 remaining animals, is protected under federal law, as boat strikes and rope entanglements threaten it. (Courtesy: Center for Coastal Studies)
