A Division I Baseball Game Sees Its First Female Appearance

Brown University’s Olivia Pichardo has made history by becoming the first female athlete to play in a Division I baseball game. Although Brown lost 10-1 to Bryant, Pichardo has carved her name into history books by pinch-hitting in the bottom of the ninth inning. The outfielder and pitcher was a member of the USA Baseball Women’s National Team who enjoyed three wins out of five matches against Team Canada last summer. Pichardo was a walk-on at Brown in the autumn, and earned herself a place on the team is November. She played basketball and volleyball before attending Brown, but had previously played club ball in the New York area. More than half a dozen women are known to have played lower-division baseball at junior colleges and four-year schools.
