The Protecting the Right to Organize Act (PRO Act) was advocated for by Rep. Seth Magaziner and state labor leaders during a media briefing outside a Warwick Starbucks, due to the coffee shop’s alleged “illegal union-busting actions.” Magaziner urged lawmakers to support the PRO Act, which aims to enable workers to organize without being retaliated against and ensure fair and safe union elections. The bill would also prevent employers from interfering in elections. A federal judge recently ruled that Starbucks had violated federal labor law “hundreds of times” during a unionization drive in Buffalo. Former employee Cassie Burke, whose attempt to unionize the Warwick Starbucks failed last year, said the PRO Act gives employees “better tools to hold companies like Starbucks accountable when they violate labor laws.”
