The St. Patrick’s Day holiday is widely celebrated with green beer and a plate of corned beef and cabbage. However, for Catholics observing Lent, eating meat on Fridays is not allowed. Cardinal Seán O’Malley granted a one-day dispensation for members of the Archdiocese of Boston who wish to eat corned beef. On the other hand, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence in Rhode Island will not be granting a general dispensation. Bishop Thomas Tobin tweeted that exceptions will be granted to anyone who asks. Catholics seeking a dispensation can reach out to the diocese’s vice chancellor or speak with the pastor of their parish.
