The Pawtucket police have charged a couple, Jeifry DeJesus and Emarys Cruz, with nine felony charges because of a 2-year-old child who was allegedly exposed to drugs. The charges include child endangerment, cruelty to or neglect of a child, possession of fentanyl, and possession of cocaine. When the police responded to a Prospect Heights apartment after receiving a call on Monday afternoon, they found that Cruz’s child has stopped breathing. The child was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where they were diagnosed positive for fentanyl, cocaine, and xylazine. The child has recovered from the exposure, and the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth, and Families is currently investigating the incident. DeJesus, the boyfriend, has been held without bail in Superior Court. He has been previously charged with domestic violence, robbery, and burglary. Cruz has also been held without bail, and court records indicate that she will appear again in court on June 7.
