A coastal storm is on its way to Southern New England and is expected to affect Tuesday. Light afternoon showers will turn into heavy rain and increase winds tonight, with the rain changing to snow by mid-day Tuesday. Accumulation will mainly occur north and west of Providence, with travel becoming difficult Tuesday evening as more areas see snowfall. Northwestern Rhode Island is under a Winter Storm Warning while the rest of the area is under a Winter Storm Watch. The eastern Massachusetts coast is under a High Wind Warning. Drivers are advised to take it slow and give themselves extra travel time due to the potential for accumulating snow, localized street flooding, and strong winds. The storm could also affect air travel, and there may be power outages due to heavy, wet snow on trees and power lines. Updates can be found on 12 News both on air and online.
