The Newport, RI police department is using technology to crack down on underage drinking during this weekend’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Officers will use an app that can detect fake IDs within seconds by scanning the barcode on the back of the ID. Sgt. Jason Head explains that the app works with DMVs across the country to verify coding specific to the ID. The police will work to keep the event safe, especially for minors, as underage drinking can lead to dangerous consequences. While the ID scanners won’t solve every problem encountered at bars, they will be an extra line of defense and help to prevent issues. The new scanners will be available to bars and liquor stores upon request.
