The House leaders have expressed concern regarding a hack of a health insurance marketplace used by members of Congress, stating that it has the potential to expose sensitive personal data of lawmakers, their employees and families, affecting thousands of people. The exchange, DC Health Link, reported that an unspecified number of customers were impacted and that they have notified them and are working with law enforcement to determine the damage. The breach includes the theft of social security numbers, phones, addresses, emails, and employer names. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries wrote that the breach could “significantly increase the risk that Members, staff and their families will experience identity theft, financial crimes, and physical threats.” It was confirmed on a hacker forum by a different user that the cybercriminal known as “thekilob” had stolen more than 55,000 records, with data for at least a dozen people posted online.
