A man identified as Robert Ayers is facing additional charges in the case involving the murder and theft of an elderly veteran in Providence. According to the police, Ayers followed Robert Fountaine to his apartment on Ethan Street in August 2022, where he attacked and killed him. Fountaine, aged 75, was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and National Guard who frequented the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Cranston. Ayers was arrested a month later and was indicted by the Providence County Grand Jury for charges including murder, burglary, theft, and breaking and entering a home where an individual older than 60 resides. Ayers is set to be arraigned on March 22.
