The recent report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed that the Amtrak conductor, Emily Herrera, who tragically died in Westerly last year after falling from a moving train, manually opened a railcar door using an emergency release while the train was still in motion. Herrera fell out of the railcar and was caught underneath the train, resulting in her death. The report further noted that Amtrak allowed conductors to bypass the train’s safety interlock relay by using the emergency door release. Although Amtrak previously viewed using the emergency door release as an “accepted field practice,” the company no longer allows employees to open passenger doors while the train is in motion.
