The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has announced that as of Friday, individuals interested in betting on sporting events, including March Madness, will no longer be required to visit a casino to do so. Massachusetts has been in the sports betting market since January and has cleared 11 sportsbooks including FanDuel, which is offering $100 worth of free bets for anyone who downloads the app and signs up before the launch on Friday. According to FanDuel’s General Manager Karol Corcoran, the goal is to keep the betting process simple. People must create an account, be 21 or older, and be within the state’s borders to place a bet. Interestingly, Rhode Islanders can head into Massachusetts to place bets if they’re in search of an alternative to the state’s only regulated mobile betting app. State Treasurer Deb Goldberg has forecast that sports betting in Massachusetts will generate between $35 million to $50 million.
