The Jamestown-Newport Ferry, shown in an accompanying image, has been operating since 1993 but is now facing difficulties. Conanicut Marine Services (CMS) and the Jamestown Town Council are at odds over where and how the ferry should operate. The council claims that its offer to allow the ferry to use a portion of the town dock and pier was rebuffed by CMS last month. CMS, by contrast, argues that it has a lease agreement giving them access to the space. This meant that, as of the council meeting on Wednesday, there was no way for the ferry to run. The dispute led some residents to claim that the town was not welcoming to visitors, while business owners worried they would lose out on customers. The Jamestown Harbor Commission has now recommended that both sides engage in mediation in order to come to a resolution.
