Covis Pharma, the maker of the unproven drug Makena, has announced that it will voluntarily remove the product from the US market after regulators indicated plans to force it off the market. The decision came four years after the drug failed to show benefits for mothers looking to carry pregnancies to term. While the FDA has been trying to withdraw the injectable drug from the market due to its ineffectiveness, Covis has filed appeals for more time to conduct additional research. Though the timing of the product’s removal is uncertain, the FDA is expected to make a decision soon on Makena’s fate.
