A Providence man, John Baldayac, has been sentenced to prison for shooting and injuring another man in the city in 2017. Baldayac, aged 31, pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon and discharge of a firearm resulting in serious injury. He was sentenced to 20 years in total, with 10 years to serve at the ACI and 10 suspended, followed by 20 years of probation. The shooting occurred in June 2017 near the basketball courts on June Street. Baldayac’s brother was arguing with the victim, a 32-year-old man, when Baldayac shot him three times. Although the victim survived, he remained in the hospital for months and had to undergo several surgeries. Attorney General Peter Neronha commented on the prevalence of gun violence in Rhode Island and the ease with which young men can acquire guns and use them to settle petty disputes.
