A 22-year-old man was arrested in New Bedford on Saturday night after allegedly firing a gun multiple times in the Cove St. and Rodney French Blvd. area. New Bedford police responded around 11:00 p.m. and apprehended the suspect, Wilber Alvarado, based on a witness description. Alvarado fled into a house on S. Second St. but was stopped on the second floor by police. They discovered a loaded Glock 22 handgun in a bag of potting soil and two baggies of crack cocaine in his possession. Two shell casings were also found on the street. Alvarado faces charges including possession of a high-capacity firearm and ammunition without a license and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling. The case is a notable example of the importance of the relationship between police and the communities they serve, according to Chief Paul Oliveira, who praised those who provided vital information.
