The Smithfield, RI fire department is among four local departments receiving a total of over $5.2 million in federal grants to improve safety and response times. The bulk of the funding, approximately $3.6 million, will go to Smithfield to hire new staff. West Warwick will receive $900,000 to buy a new fire truck, while Cumberland will receive $450,000 to replace an 18-year-old truck. Lastly, East Greenwich will receive $280,000 to improve communication with new mobile radios and vehicle repeaters. These federal funds will help enhance public safety and ensure the state’s fire departments have modern equipment and proper staffing, according to Sen. Jack Reed, who helped secure the funding. In a separate distribution last month, Cumberland, Cranston, and Narragansett received $4.5 million in grants.
