The Governor and state agencies in Rhode Island are urging families to get vaccinated before the fall academic year due to spikes in COVID-19 infections caused by the Delta variant. Over 100 community-based vaccination clinics are being coordinated and opened in partnership with community leaders. Although children under 12 are currently ineligible to receive the vaccine, back-to-school vaccination campaigns are considered an integral part of the state’s COVID response efforts. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee has not mandated masks in schools for the upcoming school year, allowing local education authorities to make their own decisions. The Education Commissioner, Angélica Infante-Green, believes that getting every eligible student and school staff member vaccinated is key to a safe and successful full return to in-person learning. Information on vaccinations and clinics can be found at vaccinateri.org and back2schoolri.com.
