The Westport School District has decided to participate in a lawsuit against social media giants, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, among others. The suit accuses these companies of contributing to a mental health crisis among young people in the country. A group from California is filing the lawsuit, and the Westport School Committee has unanimously voted to join it. Superintendent Thomas Aubin says he has seen the negative impact of social media, particularly against young women. He believes that the district has an obligation to take legal action and ensure compensation for the harm caused. According to a poll conducted by a student at Westport High School for her senior project, 70% of students hesitate to post online due to fears of judgment about their appearance. The lawsuit aims to alleviate the burden on taxpayers by requiring more counseling and human capital to address the negative impact of social media.
