The Cross Mills Public Library in Charlestown now offers Family Bird Watching Kits for loan, complete with binoculars for both adult and child use, and three bird books for all ages. Rhode Island has over 430 species of birds, with 109 of them being periodic visitors and six being imported from other countries. The Song Sparrow and American Robin are common sightings in the state, while Woodpeckers, Hummingbirds, and Hawks are present in smaller numbers. The American Goldfinch and Common Crackle are small seed-eaters, while European Starlings and House Sparrows were brought to America from overseas. The House Wren constructs nests nearby human residences, while Cowbirds lay their eggs in other birds’ nests. The library encourages individuals to become part of the peacefulness where their feathered friends reside by borrowing a Family Bird Watching Kit from its Circulation Desk.
