A Ph.D. studentship is available in the porous materials modelling group headed jointly by Dr Abbie Trewin and Professor Andrew Cooper in the Chemistry Department, University of Liverpool. This position is available immediately. Porous materials are important in a variety of applications such as molecular separations, catalysis, and energy storage. Our group has developed a new method for preparing porous materials by the self-assembly of nanometer-sized, inherently-porous organic cage molecules (Nature Mater., 2009, 8, 973; Nature, 2011, 474, 367). Understanding the dynamic behaviour of these systems at the molecular level is only possible using molecular simulations. We therefore seek a talented individual to develop molecular dynamics approaches to understand the motion of guest molecules through the pore channels in these materials (see figure, below). You will use a range of modelling techniques such as DFT, Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics calculations to model the structure of a range of porous materials and their guest responsive behaviour. The successful applicant will join a large and diverse research group and will collaborate with other members of the team, including researchers in who are synthesizing and characterizing these materials. As such, we offer a unique research environment where molecular simulations are fully embedded with the associated synthetic work, thus generating a stimulating and cutting-edge intellectual environment.
