Eligibility:
-The scheme provides fellowships to young female students from Sub-Saharan African countries and/or LDCs, to enable them to pursue postgraduate studies leading to Ph.D., degrees, at centres of excellence (renowned research institutions/universities).
-The institute must be in a developing country other than the applicant’s home country.
-The fellowships are open to qualified young women science graduates (generally below 40 years of age) from countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and/or LDCs.
- The minimum qualification of applicants is an M.Sc. degree (or equivalent), or an outstanding B.Sc. honours degree, in the natural sciences.

HED will only consider applications from regionally accredited, degree granting, U.S. higher education institutions (two- and four-year colleges and universities). U.S. colleges and universities may apply individually or in partnership with other institutions. Consortia applications are welcomed. HED encourages applications from or with the participation of Minority-Serving Institutions. In an effort to work with and strengthen local tertiary institutions, the HED program will engage U.S. institutions of postsecondary education (including universities, colleges, and community colleges) as core development partners in each of the activities funded under the program. Funding will be obligated through the U.S. institution to the cooperating institutions and stakeholders in the target countries in a fair, transparent, and open manner through program investments that will both develop and leverage the capacity of the local institutions to meet the human and institutional capacity needs of their country.

Applicants to these scholarships should review the eligibility requirements listed below closely along with using the checklist provided to ensure ALL required documents are included when applying. Applications that are missing required documents will be immediately disqualified.

  1. You must be a Canadian citizen, or have a Permanent Resident card.
  2. You must be a female undergraduate student enrolled full-time in an accredited Canadian engineering program at a Canadian university. Visit the Engineers Canada website at www.engineerscanada.ca where all accredited Canadian university engineering programs are listed to check your eligibility.
  3. While there is no limitation on the number of applications from any university or program, you CANNOT apply to more than one Vale or CEMF scholarship a year. You CANNOT win this scholarship more than once. You CAN, if unsuccessful this year, reapply in subsequent years to this scholarship or another CEMF scholarship.
  4.  For four year programs: you must be in your first year, second year or the first term of your third year, prior to the January deadline.
  5. For five year programs: you must be in first year, second year, third year or the first term of your fourth year, prior to the January deadline.
  6. You must be a leader, a volunteer and an active person in your community and/or university. Scholarships are awarded based primarily on how you are involved in your own community and the leadership skills that you have demonstrated. There is a special emphasis is placed on leadership and encouraging others to contribute to bettering Canadian society.
