Prerequisites for the fellowship are a Ph.D. degree (or its equivalent) and professional competence in archaeology. The principal requirement is a detailed research proposal of no more than three pages. While in residence, the Fellows will be expected to give a lecture for the DAI.
The German Archaeological Institute (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut or DAI) is pleased to announce the availability of two research fellowships for AIA members who are working in North American institutions. The Vanderbilt Postdoctoral Recruitment Event is a two-and-a-half-day event held at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Fellowships may be awarded to U.S. citizens for study abroad if it seems in the best interest of the candidate’s future career. However, no provisions are made for travel expenses. Foreign citizens may be funded only if their training is conducted at a U.S. institution. Awards may not be transferred outside the U.S.Applicants are not eligible after four years of post-degree laboratory experience.

Candidates must have received a Ph.D. degree after September 2007 or should expect to receive one before the fellowship commences in the second half of 2012 (usually in September). The fellowship has a period of one year, and may be extended another year by mutual agreement. The stipend is expected to be between $95,000 and $115,000, depending on the length of experience. An additional allowance for moving expenses will be provided.

Applicants must propose to conduct research at the Smithsonian Institution for a period of 12 to 24 months. Applicants must have completed or be near completion of the Ph.D. Recipients who have not completed the Ph.D. at the time of application must provide proof of completion of the degree before the fellowship begins. No employee or contractor of the Smithsonian Institution may hold a Smithsonian fellowship during the time of his/her employment or contract, nor may an award be offered to any person who has been employed by or under contract to the Institution in the previous year, without the prior approval of the Office of Fellowships. Applicants whose native language is not English are expected to have the ability to write and converse fluently in English. All application materials must be presented in English (foreign transcripts may be translated, see page 5 below).

The candidate must hold an M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree, and cannot have more than five years of postdoctoral experience at the commencement of the award. The selected postdoctoral fellow must spend at least 80% of his/her professional time engaged exclusively in autism research related activities for the duration of the award. The fellow may not simultaneously serve in an internship or residency, hold a tenure-track faculty appointment, or hold another named fellowship award during the support period. International applications are encouraged. Postdoctoral training in the laboratory where the applicant received his/her graduate degree will not be reviewed
The number of fellowships Autism Speaks will award will be determined by its available financial resources and the fit of the proposed research within the Autism Speaks portfolio.
