Plant associated bacteria can harboour numerous genetic traits that allow them to interact with plants and influence plant growth. Two of the most important plant growth promoting traits are stress phytohormone (ethylene) reduction and phosphate solubilisation. It is estimated that less than 1% of viable soil bacteria are culturable and therefore the non-culturable majority are likely to maintain a potentially novel array of plant growth promotion traits.
