The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow and Program Leader of its country strategy support program in Ethiopia for a two year, fixed-term, renewable appointment. The position will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and reports to the Director of the Development Strategy and Governance Division. The final grade level will be determined by demonstrated experience and track record of publications.
The Ethiopia country strategy support program aims to enhance Ethiopian capacity for evidence-based policy making in the areas of agriculture and rural development and poverty reduction. It supports research and capacity strengthening for the implementation of country’s national and state development strategies. It addresses policy effectiveness and coherence within the agricultural sector as well as between the agricultural sector and other sectors key to economic growth and poverty reduction in that country. Key research and capacity strengthening activities will be carried out with a broad array of stakeholders, including the Ethiopian Development Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, other concerned national and regional government departments, universities, key research institutes, and selected private sector and nongovernmental organizations.
Essential Duties:
The Fellow/Program Leader will be responsible for a) leading IFPRI’s country strategy program in Ethiopia, b) conducting research, policy advice, capacity strengthening and policy communications. It is anticipated that the Fellow/Program Leader will allocate about 30% time to program management and 70% of time to research and capacity-building activities related to the country program. The Poverty, Health and Nutrition (PHN) Division at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified Postdoctoral Fellow candidate to serve as a Research Coordinator for the evaluation of a nutrition project (Prevention of Malnutrition in Under Twos (PM2A). The position is based in Bujumbura, Burundi and will involve extensive travel within the country. This is a two-year, fixed-term, renewable appointment. Please note that Postdoctoral Fellow appointments at IFPRI have a maximum term of three (3) years, inclusive of any approved appointment extensions.
The successful candidate will coordinate all formative research, operations research and impact evaluation research activities associated with the PM2A project in Burundi, and will work in close collaboration with IFPRI’s staff at headquarters. PM2A aims to prevent infant and young child under nutrition through the provision of food rations and behavior change communication (BCC) and regular attendance at preventive health services. In Burundi, the Research Coordinator will be integrated in the project’s multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary team responsible for the PM2A program’s implementation.
Essential Duties:
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
• In collaboration with team members, design and conduct formative research, operations research and impact evaluation research for the PM2A program in Burundi
• Hire and train staff for selected data collection activities; supervise and manage all data collection and data entry activities
• Work with Washington-based team to produce project deliverables and outputs in a timely fashion
• Ensure timely and effective communication of research results to a variety of actors inside and outside the PM2A program
• Manage the research budget and related sub-contracts as needed

The South African SKA Project is a project of the Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation and comprises Africa’s bid to host the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope (SKA), the design, construction and operation of the Karoo Array Telescope (MeerKAT) and a youth into science and engineering programme focused on
supporting science and engineering students and postdoctoral fellows. Africa has been short-listed with Australia to host the SKA. If Africa is selected to site the SKA,the core of the telescope will be located in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape withadditional stations distributed throughout South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Mauritius, Madagascar, Ghana and Kenya.

The PetroSA Synthetic Fuels Research Centre (PSFRC) represents a new type of partnership between universities and industry in South Africa. PetroSA (South Africa’s national oil company) is relocating a significant part of its R&D effort to the SAIAMC (South African Institute for Advanced Materials Chemistry) at UWC namely its conversion of olefins to distillate (COD) pilot plant and associated activities. The main research thrust will be directed towards improving COD efficiency, the utilization of new feed stocks and development of new catalysts. The PSFRC project was launched in April 2010 and now the University of the Western Cape is seeking innovative and committed persons to fill two postdoctoral positions.
Postdoctoral Fellows (2 Posts) commencing 1st January 2011
These are one year contract positions which are renewable for a total of three years. Preference will be given to South Africans but non South Africans will also be considered.
To be appointed the persons should hold a PhD in an area related to gas conversion technology and an excellent record of publication in that field. At least one of the appointments will go to a person expert in catalyst development. The appointees will carry out research projects under the direction of the PSFRC Technical Committee and assist in the supervision of research students to PhD level.
