The scholarships are primarily aimed at younger Polish scholars in the early years of their career and are intended to cover a research visit at the Lauterpacht Centre in 2011.
Each scholarship is worth £3000 (GBP) and is intended to cover the cost of bench fees, accommodation, maintenance and travel incurred during an 8-12 week research visit at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. Any additional costs incurred are the responsibility of the candidate. Scholarships must be used during the 2011 calendar year.
Requirements
Bohdan Winiarski Scholarship candidates must comply with the following:• have Polish citizenship;• be fluent in English;• be graduates of a Polish university (candidates should already hold a degree, applications from students will not be accepted);• be associated with a Polish university or another institution in Poland dealing with international law;• specify a project on some aspect of international law on which they will work while resident at the Lauterpacht Centre. PhD Studentship in Geotechnical Engineering, UK
PhD position is available for candidates interested in the area of Geotechnical Engineering , University of Cambridge, UK
Offshore wind farms are becoming very popular with the UK Government’s commitment to increase wind energy to 20% by 2020. The foundations for the offshore wind farms often employ monopiles that pass through soil layers of contrasting stiffness. You will be working on a new EPSRC-funded project concerning the cyclic behaviour of monopiles that are subjected to wind and wave loading. The project involves both the development of new methodologies to characterise the soil using shear wave propagation, miniature CPT and statnamic testing. Using these, and the new 2-D actuator you will conduct a series of centrifuge tests on model monopiles in clay strata. A Postdoctoral Research Associate will also work on this project. The Geotechnical Group at Cambridge is a large vibrant group, comprised of about 35 PhDs students and 3 Post-docs, with research activity spanning most areas of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. http://www-civ.eng.cam.ac.uk/geotech_new/geotech.htm

PhD Fellow:The Role of NTRC in Redox Regulation of Chloroplast Function, Denmark
PhD Scholarship,University of Copenhagen, In Molecular Plant Biology
The work of the PhD fellow will be in connection with a research project that aims at understanding the role of a NADPH-dependent thioredoxin reductase (NTRC) in plants. NTRC is an enzyme found in the chloroplast that within a single polypeptide chain contain the domains to act as a thioredoxin reductase system and NTRC might be important both for redox regulation of disulfide bridges and scavenging H2O2. NTRC has been shown to be involved in starch synthesis, chlorophyll biosynthesis and photoperiodical development, but how these functions are interconnected and what other physiological mechanisms are affected need to be studied further. The project will involve heterologous expression of genes in E. coli, enzyme assays, and transformation of plants with tagged versions of NTRC. Mutants and transformed lines will be characterized using physiological methods and bioimaging approaches. In this work, we mainly use model organisms like Arabidopsis thaliana and moss (Physcomitrella patens) for which we already have established mutants and some transgenic lines.
Research environment
The project will be carried out at the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology at University of Copenhagen(http://www.plbio.life.ku.dk/English.aspx), where several independent research groups with strong expertise in photosynthesis, primary and secondary metabolism, bioimaging and bioengineering are located. There is an active and open scientific communication through seminar series hosted by the department and the VKR Research Centre “Pro-Active Plants” (http://www.proactiveplants.life.ku.dk/). The PhD school (http://www.fobina.dk/) provides excellent programs and support as well as opportunities for networking with scientific and industrial communities. Read the rest of this entry »
