RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship in Architecture

Travelling Research Scholarship for the students who are enrolled in a school of Architecture with RIBA-validated degree programmes, 2012

Eligible students:
• must be enrolled in a school of Architecture with RIBA-validated degree programmes AND
• must have successfully completed at least the first year of a Part 1 degree.

The RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship has been running since 2007. The spirit of the scholarship is based on Lord Foster’s own experience as a student of architecture: ‘As a student I won a prize that allowed me to spend a summer travelling through Europe to study first hand buildings and cities that I knew only from the pages of books. It was a revelation – liberating and exhilarating in so many ways. Today it is my privilege to fund the RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship, which I hope will have a lasting legacy – offering the chance for discovery and the inspiration for exciting new work – for generations to come. Applicants should have solid mathematical, telecommunications or electrical engineering background, a particular interest in applying sophisticated mathematical skills in studying large-scale highly dynamic or complex networks. The scholarship is mainly intended for PhD candidates however Master-by-Research candidates with a good academic record may also be considered provided that the applicant is determined to take a PhD study after Master completion. Successful applicants are expected to start their enrolment at the University of Sydney in Semester 1 or 2, 2012. Both national and international students may apply; however, funding does not cover any tuition fees payable by international students.

Three full-time postgraduate scholarships are available for suitably qualified candidates with a good honours degree or equivalent in science or engineering to undertake research studies leading to Master-by-Research or PhD in telecommunication networks. The grant is named after the Austrian historian, who died in 2001 and who worked at the University of Vienna as a university professor for Eastern European history from 1967 to 1993. Eligibility:
-Successful candidates will include rising scholars or practitioners active in the academic, public or private sectors that demonstrate outstanding qualifications and a record of experience and accomplishment in an area clearly related to one of the designated research themes.
-Applicants must be from Latin America, Canada, the Caribbean or the United States.
- Non-U.S. applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of and residing in the country from which they are applying at the time of application.
-Non-U.S. applicants holding permanent residency “green cards”, whether or not they reside in the U.S., are not eligible.
- Since specific residency requirements vary from country to country, applicants should contact their local Fulbright office directly to determine their eligibility.
- U.S. applicants must have U.S. citizenship and be residing permanently in the United States U.S. applicants who are currently on the Fulbright Specialist Roster may not accept any Specialist assignments during the Fulbright NEXUS Scholar Program year. Participants should be early or mid-career academics, applied researchers and/or professionals with research experience in the public, non-profit, or private sector.
- A Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree is preferred, but is not required.
-Candidates with a master’s degree are required to have a minimum of five years of research experience.
- Applicants should have particular expertise and research experience in one of the three identified program themes.
