PhD Position in Landscape Architecture and Urban Ecology, Singapore

PhD Position in Landscape Architecture and Urban Ecology, Singapore

The Singapore-ETH Center for Global Environmental Sustainability is opening a position for 1 PhD position in Landscape Architecture and Urban Ecology. The position is offered within the context of the international joint project Future Cities Laboratory (FCL), which the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) will run conjointly for the next 4 years. In particular, the position will be part of the pilot interdisciplinary module entitled “Landscape and Ecology”, which will run under the Research Stream Urban Design Strategies and Resources of the ETH Zurich FCL in Singapore. The research module deals with the interface between advanced landscape design, modeling and simulation and urban hydrology, watershed modeling and hydrological ecosystem services. The case study is located along the Ciliwung River Catchment in the urban periphery of Jakarta Indonesia.

The PhD project will focus on landscape architecture and urban ecology at specific locations along the Ciliwung watershed of Jakarta. The research will project a large metropolitan green corridor concept comprised of both natural and designed river landscape typologies at the southern periphery of the city. Prior Masters degree in architecture or landscape architecture with a demonstrated experience in large-scale landscape topology and urban design is required. Read more

Postdoctoral Position in Geometric Reconstruction of Micro-sensors, University Grenoble I, France

Post-doctoral position at Université Grenoble I (France)

University Grenoble I and Laboratoire Jean Kuntzmann are proposing a post-doctoral contract on the use in geometric reconstruction of micro-sensors (accelerometers, magnetometers, etc) able to provide information on their own orientation. Some applications of these sensors have been developped in collaboration with CEA Leti, in situations where the underlying geometry is constrained and partially known. A goal of this post-doc proposal is to generalize the use of these sensors in more complex geometric reconstruction problems.

Each of these sensor gives access to the orientation (i.e. the normal direction) of the surface where it has been placed, but gives no information on its absolute position. The first goal is to determine concrete cases where a finite number of such measurement allows to reconstruct an approximation of the underlying surface. This means imposing restrictions on both the family of surfaces that is considered as well as on the way they are to be sampled. The kind of family that could be considered include convex surfaces, developable surfaces or small deformations of a known surface, etc. The second goal is to propose reconstruction algorithms and to implement them. PhD Scholarships in Social Sciences, The University of Trento, Italy

PhD Scholarships in Social Sciences, The University of Trento, Italy

GRADUATE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

The University of Trento is now inviting applications from qualified candidates for 22 PhD Scholarships in its three PhD programmes:

PhD in Economics and Management (9 scholarships)
The programme focuses on the fields of decision sciences, organization, human and natural resource management with special attention to methodologies used in a behavioural approach to economic studies. Such an approach is increasingly adopted to generate predictions about market dynamics, particularly in the fields of finance, natural resources and tourism, and consumption, as well as to design organizations and institutions.

PhD in Local Development and Global Dynamics (4 scholarships)
The programme focuses on theoretical knowledge of the new characteristics of local development in the context of globalizing societies and on the processes through which the new emerging global codified knowledge has to be re-contextualized and combined with local specificities. Since researching local development in all its complexities requires mastering subjects that range across a wide area, the first year of the programme has a decidedly interdisciplinary character, while subsequently allowing students to acquire specialised research skills in their chosen major, also at some of the partner universities.
