Three PhD Studentship at University of Sheffield, UK
Three PhD Scholarships in Project Deep Carbon – Particle Detector Physics, Geo-Engineering and Law for Environmental Carbon Sequestration, University of Sheffield, UK
Study Subject: Energy and Environment
Employer: University of Sheffield
Level: PhD
University´s interdisciplinary Energy and Environment theme addresses the international scientific consensus of rapid and globally damaging environmental change driven by natural resource demand and greenhouse gas emissions. This network forms one strand of our commitment to address the imperative to adapt the way humans capture and utilise energy, manage waste, do business and govern themselves to mitigate and manage the impacts of environmental change. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) of CO2 underground is now recognised as a major tool we have for tackling environmental climate change in the short to medium term. The Deep Carbon network will focus on this by building new physics technologies using muon particle detection, needed to monitor what happens to the carbon placed underground, on new geo-physical and engineering models for CO2 storage, needed to optimise selection of suitable deep sites, and new international governance structures, required to underpin legal aspects of safe carbon storage. Award details: A network of three PhD scholarships, one each in Physics, Engineering and Law, is being funded by the University for 3 years, providing a stipend at the standard Research Council rate (£13,590 in 2011-12), UK/EU fees and a research training grant of £1,000 p.a.

Research Associate in the Department of Physics at University of Strathclyde, UK
University of Strathclyde offers Research Associate position in the Department of Physics, UK
Study Subject: Detection of vibration in silica fibres and silica test masses
Employer: University of Strathclyde
Level: Postdoctoral
This position is available until 31 March, 2012, in the Gravitational Physics group led by Dr N.A. Lockerbie. The work is aimed at detection of vibration in silica fibres and silica test masses, using elecro-optical techniques, for use in gravitational wave detectors. The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D in experimental physics, with direct postdoctoral experience in both the fabrication and failure-mode testing of vitreous silica fibres for the suspension of optical components in gravitational wave detectors. Equally, evidence of work on the measurement (and, ideally, damping, too) of ‘violin-mode’ resonances in such fibres is essential. A sound practical background in the relevant optical and electronic instrumentation is therefore mandatory, and a knowledge of stress and failure analysis theory in disordered solids would be desirable, A letter of application telling us why you have the energy, skills, knowledge and understanding of Higher Education or other ‘Not for profit’ sectors to make a real and strategic difference in the post described, A completed application form to which a full curriculum vitae should be attached. The names and addresses of three referees should be given on the application form. The referees may be contacted by the University without further permission from the candidate unless you indicate to the contrary Read the rest of this entry »
