PhD in History and Civilization, European University Institute, Italy
Scholarship program for PhD studies in History and Civilization, European University Institute, Italy
EUI Department of History and Civilization studies European History from the Renaissance to the present day, recognizing that the idea—or ideas—of Europe remains contested, as does the issue of its frontiers over time. The Department is committed to seeing European History in a global perspective, investigating Europe’s history in relation to other regions and cultures of the world. It distinguishes itself as a place where different historiographical and methodological approaches meet, and, while most activities are conducted in English, it encourages multi-lingualism.
Defined by intellectual openness, the Department strongly promotes comparative and transnational studies of cultural and economic trends; the history of social, political and intellectual movements and traditions; and a gender approach to history. It aims to capture the range of contradictions, specificities, continuities and breaches that characterize both Europe’s past and the study of that past, so as to face the most challenging questions of its present

PhD Positions: “Industrial Quality Monitoring based on Statistical Process Control (SPC) Techniques”, Belgium
Part of the research fits in the framework of an interdisciplinary research project entitled “Prognostics for Optimal Maintenance (POM)
Study Subject: Science
Employer: Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
Level: PhD
Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a widely used framework for monitoring industrial processes. Within SPC, control charts are a powerful tool to detect deviations from normal operation, although they are mainly fit to processes with a fixed target. Such fixed target, however, is not present in numerous applications and the proposed research will focus on such nonstationary processes. Examples are ubiquitous and include production processes in the agro-food sector but also within the framework of monitoring industrial equipment that is subject to degradation.
Part of the research fits in the framework of an interdisciplinary research project entitled “Prognostics for Optimal Maintenance (POM)”. It is coordinated by the Flanders Mechatronics Technology Centre (FMTC). The goal of the project is to provide the tools needed to improve the way maintenance of industrial machinery is done. Today maintenance is regarded as a necessary burden to keep the machines running. However, companies agree that it would be much better if they could step down from this image and innovate the way machines and maintenance are sold. The POM consortium will Read the rest of this entry »
PhD Research Scholar in Experimental Economics, Norway
PhD Scholarship at Hordaland region
Study Subject: Experimental Economics
Employer: Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration
This scholarship is for a period of four years and combines taking a PhD programme at NHH with working as a research scholar. Research scholars are required to work as a teaching and/or research assistant for the department they are admitted to on enrolling in the PhD programme. The work requirement corresponds to 25% of a full position a year, with the remaining 75% being dedicated to the successful completion of a PhD.
The candidate will be a part of the research group on experiments and social choice at NHH. This research group, which includes assistant professor Ingvild Almås, professor Alexander W. Cappelen, associate professor Erik Ø. Sørensen and professor Bertil Tungodden, has pursued three distinct avenues of research. First, using economic experiments, it studies how individual choices are affected by normative considerations. In particular, the research group has looked at issues of fairness and responsibility, conducting experiments with various subject groups and international experiments where the subjects interact via the internet. An important part of this research program has been to structurally estimate random utility models that can explain the observed behaviour. Second, the research group also considers how different theories of justice can be justified through axiomatic analysis, and how these theories relate to inequality and poverty measurement. Third, Read the rest of this entry »
PhD Student Position in Historical Geology and Paleontology, Sweden
Origins of Proterozoic-Cambrian photosynthetic micro biota
Study Subject: Historical Geology, Palaentology
Employer: Uppasala University
Level: PhD
Unicellular, organic-walled photosynthetic microbiota (prokaryotes and eukaryotes) diversified at an increasing rate through the Proterozoic and in the Cambrian explosion. Their phylogenetic relationships are still poorly understood because their morphology is not always sufficient to infer their systematic position. Studies of phenotypical features, combined with cell wall ultrastructure, biogeochemistry and biomarkers may help to unravel their biological affinities. More precise placement within a geologic time frame will allow the cause-effect relationships between evolving photosynthesing (primary producers) and forthcoming heterotrophic biota (consumers) versus global environmental change to be better understood.
The PhD student will collaborate with researchers at Uppsala and in foreign universities working with the palaeobiology, systematics, ultrastructure and biogeochemistry of cell wall, and the evolution of organic-walled microbiota. The aim of the project is to elucidate the biological affiliations and relationships to extant microbiota of selected microfossils (acritarchs), Read the rest of this entry »
Germany PhD Studentship in Chemistry at HTE Aktiengesellschaft
Germany PhD Studentship positioin in Chemistry at HTE Aktiengesellschaft
You have successfully completed your studies in the field of Chemistry or Technical Chemistryand are looking for a Ph.D. / doctoral position which will give you the opportunity to conduct
your research work in an industrial environment.
As a Ph.D. student in the R&D Solutions department at hte Aktiengesellschaft, you will work within the scope of the publically funded research project “DryRef – Energy Efficient Catalysis in Dry Reforming” on a national level with both industrial and academic partners. Together with the project team at hte you will develop a scientific concept to solve technically challenging problems, learning the planning, synthesis and characterisation of high throughput libraries. Operation of our test rigs and the evaluation of the subsequent test data and its correlation to micro-structural investigations also fall into the scope of your work. You will be directly supervised by renowned scientists within hte, and in addition to the project orientated support, a sound training in the field of technical catalysis will be provided through seminars and workshops. The university supervision to the work will be provided by the Institute of Read the rest of this entry »
Sweden Postdoctoral / PhD Positions in Mathematical Modeling for Toxicological Risk Assessment
PhD or Postdoctoral Scholarship at the department of Work Environment Toxicology at Karolinska Institute Sweden
Unit of Work Environment Toxicology seeks Post Doc / PhD candidates for development and application of advanced mathematical models related to toxicological risk assessment. The research will be carried out within three projects, namely:
- Development of PBPK models for nano particles
- Toxicokinetic population models as basis for biomonitoring
- Improvements in dose-effect analysis to refine and reduce animal experiments
A substantial part of the work relates to PBPK and Benchmark-Dose (BMD) model development and computer simulations of the toxicokinetic behavior of nanoparticles and biomarkers, as well as dose-biomarker and dose-response relationships. Collaboration with various other research groups is foreseen.

Center for Ethics in Society / Program on Global Justice Post Doctoral Fellowships in USA 2011-2012
This Postdoctoral fellowship is searching those candidates who are interested in candidates with research interests in international topics, including human rights, immigration, and environmental justice, but we welcome all applicants with strong normative interests that have some practical implications
In early January 2011, The Center for Ethics in Society will be accepting applications for our two post doctoral fellowship programs. It is our hope that our post doctoral fellows will partner with us to develop an inter-disciplinary ethics community across the campus. More information about the application process and the specific deadlines will be posted during Fall quarter.
This fellowship program is run jointly by The Center for Ethics in Society and the Program on Global Justice. For 2011-2012, we seek up to four post doctoral fellows. We welcome candidates with substantial normative research interests from diverse backgrounds including philosophy, the social sciences, and professional schools. We are especially interested in candidates with research interests in international topics, including human rights, immigration, and environmental justice, but we welcome all applicants with strong normative interests that have some practical implications. Fellows will teach one class, participate in the Political Theory and Global Justice Workshops, interact with undergraduates in the Ethics in Society program and help in developing an inter-disciplinary ethics community across the campus.
