Kenya–German Postgraduate Training Programme 2010-2011, Germany
Scholarship for Keneyan citizens for Doctoral Studies tenable in Germany
Kenya Vision 2030 policy document recommends investment in Science, Technology & Innovation (STI) in priority key sectors. One such area involves capacity building in our Public Universities through advanced training of personnel. As part of this initiative, in June 2010, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MOHEST) (for the Government of Kenya ) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) (for the Germany government) signed a five (5) year Agreement for cooperation in Postgraduate Training Programme in science. The objective of the programme is to train twenty (20) PhD research students in Public Universities and Constituent Colleges tenable in German and lasting forty two (42) months.

PhD Position in Computational Materials Science, Sweden
PhD Position at Uppsala University – Sweden : Scholarship for doctoral studies at the Department of Physics and Materials Science. Starting date: January 2011
PhD project is to develop a theoretical understanding of the nature of real-space and momentum-space inhomogeneous states that appear in d- and f-electron materials with strong electronic correlations and competing orders.
This project will include the application of modern computational methods based on density functional theory as well as analytical work with model Hamiltonians. Strong background in mathematics and theoretical physics is required from the candidates. Knowledge of computational methods and programming is an advantage.
The PhD position is for four years. The studies will be performed in close collaboration with Los Alamos National Lab, where the successful candidate is expected to spend a significant part of his/her time.
PhD Position in Systematics and Evolution, Sweden
PhD Position at Stockholm University – Sweden : Research will be based on “Phylogeny, colonization and evolution of water beetles on Madagascar”
PhD-project will be part of a research project at the Department of Entomology, Swedish Museum of Natural History, which deals with the faunistics, distribution, taxonomy, phylogeny and evolutionary history of water beetles on Madagascar. DNA labwork, fieldwork, databasing, phylogenetic analyses, dating, taxonomy etc. will be important parts, as well as a conservation aspect. The DNA labwork will be conducted at the Molecular Systematics Laboratory at the Swedish Museum of Natural History.
Qualifications
To be qualified for research studies in systematic zoology the applicant needs to have passed in at least 120 hp of biology studies, including an approved independent project in systematic zoology of at least 30 hp at advanced level. Applicants who have in principle acquired the corresponding competence in Sweden or abroad are also qualified.
PhD Position on Terrestrial Carbon Modelling, Germany
Scholarship for PhD Studies at Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry
Research group is dedicated to a better understanding of the role of Vegetation-Soil feedbacks for biogeochemical cycles within the Earth System. In particular we are focusing on the interaction between the carbon and water cycles at different spatial and temporal scales. The integration of knowledge gained by exploring local data (e.g. ecosystem carbon and water flux data, soil profile information) and spatial data (e.g. remote sensing, spatial data bases) into process-based dynamic models will play a pivotal role in this context.
The PhD candidate will contribute to these issues from a carbon cycle modelling perspective. We are using and developing dynamic global vegetation models which combine representations of biogeochemical fluxes and terrestrial vegetation dynamics to address the response of ecosystem functions to climate change. PhD candidate is dedicated to improve such a process-based model with respect to vegetation carbon processes by making use of remotely sensed information about the ecosystem state and function.
