Netherlands : PhD student-Indexing massive RDF data sets

The section Information Systems consists of the chairs Databases and Hypermedia and Architecture of Information Systems.

The Databases and Hypermedia group is world-leading in the area of adaptive hypermedia and adaptive web-based information systems. The group has produced the most referenced reference model for adaptive hypermedia and developed the most popular general-purpose adaptive hypermedia system AHA!. The group has expertise in data mining, web engineering and semantic web, and also works in application fields for adaptive technology, including e-learning and e-culture. The group has ample experience in national and international research projects, both as participant and as coordinator.

Project description:
The SeeQR project is a research collaboration between TU Eindhoven and TU Delft, the leading technical universities in the Netherlands, focusing on web data management. The project has an opening in Eindhoven for a fully funded PhD student position (4 years), supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), to start as soon as possible but no later than 1 April 2011.

Motivated by the growing increase in the practical use of semantic web data management technologies such as RDF and SPARQL, e.g., in the Linked Open Data initiative,  the PhD student will investigate sophisticated scalable RDF indexing mechanisms and SPARQL query processing strategies over massive dynamically evolving data sets. PhD Studentship-Optical Measurement of Precision Surfaces (based at Loughborough University), UK

Loughborough University – Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

A postgraduate studentship is available to investigate new methods to increase the capability of optical interferometry and to introduce new levels of traceability in the measurement of precision engineering surfaces.

With the lateral resolution of a few micrometres and an axial resolution of a few nanometres interferometery is becoming an increasingly popular means to characterise engineering surfaces. As a non-contacting technique, commercial interferometers make an indirect estimate of surface form deduced from measurements of the light scattered from the surface. Due to the complex interaction between light and rough surfaces anomalous behaviour can occur and, for this reason, traditional contacting methods making more direct measurements using stylus-based instrumentation remain the basis of international (ISO) surface standards. The purpose of this project is to develop optimisation strategies based on new, more sophisticated surface scattering models to increase measurement capability and to estimate uncertainty in optical interferometers. Norway : Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Geology

A position as Post Doc is available at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo (http://www.geo.uio.no).

The position is affiliated with the Section for Tectonics, Petrology and Geochemistry (TPG). The fellowship is for a period of 3 years, with up to 10 % compulsory work, starting no later than1 Oct 2010.

The Department of Geosciences is the broadest geoscience Department in Norway, and comprises sections for Environmental Geology and Hydrology; Tectonics, Petrology and Geochemistry; Petroleum Geology and Geophysics; Meteorology and Oceanography, and Physical Geography. The Department participates in three Centres of Excellence.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to participate in the TPG group’s ongoing research in the Caledonides in the North Atlantic Region (Northern Norway, Svalbard and Northeast Greenland). The research is strongly field-based and the successful candidate must document extensive field-experience with metamorphic tectonites. Candidates with experience in geochronology/thermochronology (ID-TIMS, LA-ICPMS, Ar-Ar dating),metamorphic petrology and structural geology are particularly welcome.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Cosmology, Norway

The Institute of  Theoretical Astrophysics is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. It presently has 12 permanent professors/associate professors. The Institute employs about 8 postdoctoral research fellows and has about 14 Ph.D. students. The research activity of the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics is concentrated around solar physics and cosmology

The fellowship period is 2 years. No one can be appointed for more than one specified period at the same institution. The position is available from 1st November, 2010.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has appointed the cosmology group of the Institute as an emerging top-tier research group. The participation in the European Space Agency’s flagship mission Planck and the ground based CMB polarization experiment QUIET, and a strong effort in fundamental cosmological theory, act as two foci for consolidating the group and developing it further to become one of Norway’s internationally most visible research groups in the physical sciences.

The position is connected to the project ”Studying the early universe with non-Gaussianities”, funded by the Research Council of Norway. The successful applicant is expected to carry out research on theoretical and/or data analysis issues related to non-Gaussianities in the cosmic microwave background. The research may be focused on primordial non-Gaussianity, non-Gaussianities from second-order effects, systematic effects, foregrounds or any other possible source of non-Gaussianity.
