Austria : Doctoral Programme Mathematical Logic in Computer Science 2010

The Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) is offering 10 PhD student positions within the doctoral programme Mathematical Logic in Computer Science which is launched in the academic year 2010/2011. The programme is jointly organized by the faculties of Informatics, Mathematics, and Physics, with a strong emphasis on Logic in Computer Science; computational logic is one of the priority research areas of the Faculty of Informatics.PhD students for this full-time programme are recruited world-wide, all courses are held in English. Five of the ten positions are reserved for female applicants.
There has always been a close connection between the areas of Logic, Mathematics and Computer Science. Mathematical Logic is at the heart of these fields and contributed outstanding important results like e.g. various Undecidabilty results, Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorems. Physics offers new challenges to the field such as Quantum Computation. The Doctoral Programme Mathematical Logic in Computer Science lies in this intersection of areas and is embedded in ongoing projects and research carried out at Vienna University of Technology. The programme is interdisciplinary and fosters the application of Mathematical Logic to Computer Science; envisaged key application areas are Model-Based Design and Verification as well as Advanced Information Systems. MRes Studentship Counter-terrorism legislation and Community Engagement, UK

University of Glamorgan – Centre for Police Sciences, Faculty of Health Sport and Sciences
Applications are invited for a full-time studentship available in the Centre for Police Sciences in the Faculty of Health, Sport and Science. This position is a partially funded position with a bursary of £6000.00 paid during the first 12 months, with exemption from University related fees and will be for a period of up to 18 months (full time) or 3 years (part time). Candidates will not be expected to contribute to teaching at the centre, but if the opportunity should arise, will be paid in accordance with the Hourly Paid Lecturer framework
Programme of Research:
The study will examine whether Muslim communities have been affected by counter terrorism legislation. Further, it will also consider whether those community members have been radicalized leading to extremism within the family or the local community. Since 9/11 there have been over 1,500 terror suspects arrested in the UK with nearly two thirds released without charge. This has led to claims from within these communities that the police tactics are both heavy handed and counter-productive. This research project will examine how security agencies approaches are implemented and applied and will consider new methods which will impact upon professional practice. The post will involve research undertaking a literature review, survey and accompanied field work with Muslim communities in Cardiff interviewing families and community representatives. The post holder will also be involved in focus group activity.
This full time research position is partially funded with a bursary of £6000.00 paid during the first 12 months, with exemption from University related fees for a period of up to 18 months (full time)
Candidates will not be expected to contribute to teaching at the centre, but if the opportunity should arise, will be paid in accordance with the Hourly Paid Lecturer framework. Read the rest of this entry »
