PhD Positions in Brain and Music in the European Initial Training Network EBRASMUS, Europe

4 PhD positions “Brain & Music” in the European Initial Training Network EBRAMUS
EBRAMUS (Europe BRAin and MUSic) is a consortium of European research centres to study new perspectives for stimulating cognitive and sensory processes using music. EBRAMUS offers a unique, interdisciplinary training program to study the behavioural, functional and structural effects of music on rehabilitation, learning, and facilitation of cognitive processes. Its goal is to train PhD students in behavioural and neuroscience (EEG, fMRI, etc.) methods applied to the investigation of the use of music in boosting language processing, learning, memory as well as motor behaviour.
Four 3-year PhD scholarships are available with projects within EBRAMUS:
-CIM: gesture-based audio stimulation in cochlear implant users.

Exchange Programme,MRC People,UK

Under the MRC People Exchange Programme the MRC has launched the MRC Research Leader Fellowship scheme that enables experienced research active scientists to exchange knowledge and forge successful partnerships between industry and academia.

Objectives

MRC Research leader fellows will be at the forefront of their discipline, acting as champions for successful and productive collaborative industry-academic research.

The fellowships will stimulate the exchange of knowledge, “hard” skills and creativity between industry and academia to promote understanding and further enhance the quality and attractiveness of the UK’s biomedical and health research environment.

Criteria for assessment

Applications will be reviewed by the MRC Industrial Collaborative Training and Careers panel, chaired by Professor Ian Kimber, University of Manchester. The panel will be made up of experts drawn from both academia and industry.

Fellowship in Biomedical Informatics computational Biologyof Neuroinformatics and Health Informatics UK

The MRC has identified the application of informatics as an area of strategic importance to health and medical research. This special training fellowship is aimed at developing outstanding individuals who are seeking to move into the application of mathematical, statistical and computational methods to biomedical research problems.

The MRC is keen to support individuals with a clear ambition for their research and a strong and practical sense of how they develop their careers as leading biomedical scientists and informaticians. The special fellowship is awarded at the post-doctoral entry level only and all proposals must include a well-specified formal training element in addition to a research project. The award provides up to four years of support and the opportunity to enhance the research training through placement in an overseas research centre, a second UK research centre or in UK industry.

Fellowship in Economics of Health of UK

The MRC fellowship in Economics of Health extends the preceding joint MRC/NIHR/ESRC fellowship, established to support two rounds of annual fellowship competitions. In funding a further competition, MRC aims to strengthen capacity in health economics by attracting early postdoctoral researchers trained in economics research methods to apply their skills to health economics problems.

The MRC fellowship provides up to three years early-career support to help individuals begin to establish a research track record in the field and to undertake further training. As such the aim of the fellowship is to:

* Develop and execute a programme of challenging postdoctoral research, applying econometric methods to an important health question;
* Undertake specific, high quality training to gain the additional skills needed to deliver the research;
* Undertake a programme personal development towards rapidly becoming an independent research scientist in the field of economics of health;
* Publish and otherwise disseminate the research findings from their fellowship.

Applications are now invited for commencement in 2011.

Fellowship in Clinical Research Training of UK

The MRC clinical research training fellowships (CRTF) aim to train and develop outstanding medically and other clinically qualified professionals to become rigorous scientists, able to relate their research to clinical medicine and to the improvement of health and wellbeing. Many MRC CRTFs will eventually become research leaders in their own right. Others will purse a predominantly clinical career, applying to clinical practice lasting insights that they have gained through their research training.

Applicants will demonstrate a record of challenging pre-doctoral research. They will have an ambitious and rigorous approach to research and to their own development as researchers.

Fellowship of Junior Research in UK

Imperial Junior Research Fellows (JRFs) receive three-year fellowships, which include a competitive salary, research expenses and mentoring support from a senior Imperial academic. This support gives JRFs the freedom to focus on their research, with no obligatory teaching or administration.

Imperial’s JRF scheme was set up in 2008 with the aim of helping researchers make the leap from post-doc to lecturer. It is investing more than £10 million over five years into the scheme, Read more

Research Associate of Section of Bimolecular Medicine / Department of Surgery and Cancer, UK

Research Associate position, funded by the EU consortium project ENVIROGENOMARKERS, is available from 1 September 2010. We are seeking to employ a motivated person with experience in LCMS-based biofluid analysis and chemical carcinogenesis research, who can deliver consistent, high-quality metabolic profile data as part of biomarker discovery work. The successful candidate will take up the role as primary metabolic profiling analyst in the ENVIROGENOMARKERS project and be responsible for day-to-day biofluid sample analysis and associated data management.

ENVIROGENOMARKERS is the first large-scale application of the full range of omics technologies in a population study aiming at a) the discovery and validation of novel biomarkers predictive of increased risks of a number of chronic diseases including breast cancer, b) the exploration of the association of such biomarkers with environmental exposures, including high-priority pollutants, and c) the discovery and validation of biomarkers of exposure to the above and other high-priority environmental exposures. The project will involve profiling samples taken from biobank cohorts such as The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). This is a unique and exciting opportunity and would make an excellent project for a recently qualified postdoctoral scientist. Read more
