PhD Researchers on Distributed Information Indexing and Retrieval, the University of Geneva, Switzerland

The Viper group of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Geneva is seeking
Two PhD Researchers on Distributed Information Indexing and Retrieval

The Viper group on Multimedia Information Management (http://viper.unige.ch) is part of the Computer Vision and Multimedia Laboratory. The Viper group initially specializes on visual information management and has now extended its activities on multimedia information management. This activity includes several complementary aspects along the chain of assisted content-based information management. We address the problem of content-based search and retrieval of multimedia data in relation with modern machine learning and data mining techniques.

This is also related to our research on content characterization where we mixed automated characterization techniques and knowledge management and discovery techniques. The Viper group is now chairing the Technical Committee 12 of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR-TC12, “Multimedia and Visual Information Systems” http://www.iapr-tc12.org). It has co-organized the ACM International Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (ACM-CIVR 2009, http://www.civr2009.org) and is chairing the International Conference of the ACM-SIG on Information Retrieval in 2010 (ACM-SIGIR 2010, http://www.sigir2010.org). MSc Research Opportunity in Environmental Chemistry, Ireland

Project Title: Chemical analysis of novel contaminants in the Irish aquatic environment and their potential to bioconcentrate and bioaccumulate up the food chain.

Funding Agency: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government.

Description: The project shall concentrate on using established techniques to measure novel environmental contaminants, particularly pharmaceuticals in the Irish aquatic environment and their bioconcentration ability. The various pharmaceuticals under investigation (including antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, lipid regulators, anti-convulsants and beta-blockers), are known to be present in Irish municipal effluents. Chemical analysis of pharmaceuticals in treated municipal effluent and receiving waters (freshwater and marine) shall be undertaken using solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by analysis by LC/MS/MS to identify and quantify these
compounds. The ability of these compounds to bioconcentrate shall be investigated by chemical analysis on various tissues from bioindicator species, marine and freshwater bivalve mussels (Mytilus edulis and the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha respectively) exposed in vivo and in situ to individual compounds, mixtures and complex effluents. Bioaccumulation through the food chain with the potential for human exposure shall also be investigated using multi-tropic level studies. Read more

A Postdoctoral position at the Georg-Speyer-Haus in Frankfurt am Main (Germany)

The Lohrum-group is seeking a highly motivated Postdoc with interest in genomic and bioinformatic cancer research.

Our research team is interested in tumour suppressor mechanisms of the p53-protein family in the post-genomic and epigenetic era. We are applying modern genomic and molecular techniques to study the tumour-suppressor mechanisms of the p53-family in healthy as well as cancerous cells (Smeenk et al, 2008; Koeppel et al, 2009).

Applicants should have experience in genomic research and bioinformatic expertise.

Please send your complete application (CV, letter of motivation, name and address of two referees) via email to: lohrum[ at ]em.uni-frankfurt.de

The Georg-Speyer-Haus in Frankfurt am Main, Germany is an academic research institute of great tradition in biomedical sciences. The institute maintains the status of an independent foundation, and is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Health and the Ministry for Sciences and Arts of the State of Hessen.
